Indianapolis, December 27, 1996 – Forty-eight weeks ago this publication was born for the purpose of telling The Good News of Jesus Christ. We have witnessed the ministry of Jesus as it began in Galilee. We have seen his love and compassion. We have been amazed by his miracles and we have watched with awe as Jesus walked, with both eyes wide open, into Jerusalem and straight to the cross. Through the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John we were witnesses to it all. And yet in the final analysis our troubled journalist still asks the ultimate question, "where is the good news in all this?"
According to Paul, the cross is the good news.
"Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." (Gal 1:3-5 NIV)
"When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power." (1 Cor 2:1-5 NIV)
"Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the good news I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this good news you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." (1 Cor 15:1-4 NIV)
"Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." (Rom 6:3-11 NIV)
It is not within the poor capabilities of this writer to improve upon this message, so I will close by borrowing from the words of Paul. May the Grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you, and may you be blessed by the Gospel of Christ.
