The Cruel Cross

Key Text: Matthew 27:45-46,50

From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"-- which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" …. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. (NIV)

Theme:

The real cruelty and tragedy of the cross lies not in the physical suffering which Jesus endured but in the emotional and spiritual agonies. Three events drawn from the last 18 hours of his life illustrate the true meaning of the cross for Jesus and show us something of its tragedy.

Application:

It is no wonder that so many have trouble with the cruel cross. But as Christians, we must embrace the tragedy of the cross in order to enjoy the victory that is there.
