Key Text: 1 Corinthians 1:22-24
Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Theme:
The cross is not passive. It does not sit there politely waiting for people to pay it attention. It is active in the extreme, provoking people to take the strongest stands relative to it: to either bow in adoration or to stiffen in rebellion. The cross will allow no middle ground.
Application:
Have you felt the offense of the cross? If there hasn’t been something about the cross that has turned your stomach or made you angry or tempted you to rebel, you have not really seen the cross as yet. The cross intends to cut us, to slap us, and to force us to see things about ourselves we would rather not see.
