Christ and the Cross

Key Text: John 10:17-18

The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-- only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.

Theme:

Jesus played his part in the events of Calvary. He was not the helpless victim of an avenging God. Nor was he simply God taking upon himself our punishment. Rather, Jesus was both divine and human, willing to go to the cross because of divine love and able to go to the cross because he was made flesh like us.

Application:

Although the thought of Jesus as God/Man is difficult to grasp, it is necessary for us to understand his nature. Only when we allow Jesus to be fully God and fully man can we claim him as Savior.
